Update from SIA about Mandatory Physical Intervention Training

Following our recommendations and in the interest of public safety, ministers have agreed that physical intervention skills training will become mandatory for all Door Supervisors in the United Kingdom.

Although this training is already a compulsory part of the updated nationally-recognised Door Supervision qualification for new applicants introduced in June 2010, it is currently not a requirement for those who qualified before this date.

Knowing how to escort people from premises safely is important to Door Supervisors, who may have to deal with this type of situation as part of their role. Being trained in the appropriate techniques and how to use them will help door staff to manage difficult situations, minimising the risk of injury to members of the public and to themselves.

The module will include Physical Intervention Skills training , and other areas such as considerations in dealing with 14 - 18 year olds and first aid awareness. Once the requirement is introduced, Door Supervisors who trained prior to the introduction of the new qualification in 2010 will need to pass this module before they can renew their licence.

The SIA is now working closely with the Home Office to determine the timescales and arrangements necessary to introduce this mandatory requirement at the earliest opportunity. We anticipate that this will happen towards the end of this year. At least six months notice will be given before the requirement is introduced so that licence holders have time to undertake the training before their licence expires.

Level 2 Award in Door Supervision (Scotland) Course Information

Under the Private Security Industry Authority Act 2001, all individuals wishing to work in the private security industry must undertake a recognised qualification before applying for a licence.

The HABC Award in Door Supervision (Scotland) (at SCQF Level 6) has been developed to meet the requirements of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). It is based on the relevant SIA Specifications for Learning and Qualifications and provides the necessary skills and knowledge for learners who wish to apply for an SIA licence and work as a Door Supervisor within the private security industry.

Course Layout

The qualification comprises 4 mandatory units:

Unit 1 - Working in the Private Security Industry
Unit 2 - Working as a Door Supervisor
Unit 3 - Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry
Unit 4 - Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry

This qualification can enable the learner to progress onto the SVQ in Providing Security Services or undertake further learning in other areas of the private security industry such as CCTV Operations or Security Guarding.


Assessment


Unit 1 - Working in the Private Security Industry

• 25 Question Multiple-choice examination paper
• Successful candidates must achieve a score of at least 18 out of 25
• Examination duration - 40 minutes
• Guided learning hours for this unit are 10 hours.

Unit 2 - Working as A Door Supervisor

• 40 Question multiple-choice examination paper
• Successful candidates must achieve a score of at least 28 out of 40
• Examination duration - 1 hour
• Guided learning hours for this unit are 10 hours

Unit 3 - Conflict Management for the Private Security Industry

• 25 Question Multiple-Choice examination paper
• Successful candidates must achieve a score of at least 18 out of 25
• Examination duration - 40 minutes
• Guided learning hours for this unit are 8 hours

Unit 4 - Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry

• Ongoing practical assessment throughout the course by the tutor
• 10 true or false questions marked by the course tutor
• Guided learning hours for this unit are 10 hours
